Bryce Harper discusses Orlando Arcia staredown after two-homer game, Braves shortstop unhappy comments got out
Bryce Harper's staredown of Orlando Arcia after hitting two home runs in Game 3 of the 2023 NLDS was one of the most memorable moments of the postseason.
Harper had been thrown out at first base to end Game 2 after a risky baserunning decision, and Arcia reportedly made some mocking comments in the Braves' clubhouse afterwards
.
Harper said that he heard about Arcia's comments from his teammates, and that they motivated him to perform well in Game 3.
"Yeah, I stared right at him," Harper said after the game when asked whether he intended to stare down Arcia.
During an on-field interview with the TBS broadcast, he added: "It's just a game. It's fun. Everybody played a really good game.
"
Arcia denied that he meant to disrespect Harper, and said that he was unhappy that his comments got out of the clubhouse.
"He wasn't supposed to hear it," Arcia said of Harper through his interpreter. "That is why we were talking in the clubhouse."
"I thought whatever is said in the clubhouse, stays in the clubhouse," Arcia said, per McKercher.
Whether or not Arcia meant to disrespect Harper, his comments clearly motivated the Phillies slugger. Harper's two home runs in Game 3 helped Philadelphia take a 2-1 lead in the series, and they ultimately went on to win the NLDS in five games
.
The Harper-Arcia staredown was just one of many memorable moments from the 2023 MLB postseason. It was a reminder that even the smallest of things can fire up a player and motivate them to perform their best.
