Olympic icon Mary Lou Retton 'fighting for her life,' according to daughter

Olympic gold medalist Mary Lou Retton is "fighting for her life" in the intensive care unit after contracting a rare form of pneumonia, according to her daughter McKenna Kelley.

Kelley posted on Instagram Tuesday asking for prayers and donations to help offset her mother's medical bills.

"My mom is in the ICU fighting for her life," Kelley wrote. "She has a very rare form of pneumonia and is not able to breathe on her own. She's been in the ICU for over a week now and is on a ventilator. We're asking for your prayers and support during this difficult time."



Retton, 55, is one of the most decorated gymnasts in American history. She won five medals at the 1984 Los Angeles Olympics, including the gold medal in the all-around competition. She was the first American woman to win the Olympic all-around title.

Retton's accomplishments at the 1984 Olympics helped to make gymnastics one of the most popular sports in the United States. She became a national icon and helped to inspire a generation of young athletes.

Retton has continued to be involved in the sport of gymnastics since her retirement. She is a motivational speaker and has worked as a commentator for NBC Sports. She is also the founder of the Mary Lou Retton Foundation, which provides support to young athletes.

Kelley's post has received an outpouring of support from Retton's fans and fellow athletes.

"Sending so much love and prayers to Mary Lou and your family," gymnast Simone Biles tweeted.

"Mary Lou is one of the strongest people I know," former Olympic gymnast Nastia Liukin tweeted. "I'm sending her all my love and support during this difficult time."

Retton's family has set up a GoFundMe page to help raise money for her medical expenses. The page has already raised over $200,000.

"We are so grateful for all the love and support we have received during this difficult time," Kelley wrote on the GoFundMe page. "Your prayers and donations mean the world to us."
